About the DOT SAP Program
Before you can return to a DOT safety-sensitive position, you must successfully complete the Return-to-Duty process.​ A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) will:

Conduct a video-based face-to-face assessment.

Recommend a required plan of treatment and/or education, and determine what portion will need to be completed before the employee can return to safety-sensitive duties. This may be a few days or longer, depending on the assessment results.

Confirm compliance with the recommended program.

Conduct a video-based face-to-face follow-up evaluation, to determine eligibility to return to safety-sensitive duty.

If the SAP determines the recommended program was successful, the SAP will send a report of compliance to your employer (or future employer). Your employer can then order a return-to-duty test, which must be negative before you can go back to work. If your return-to-duty test is positive, you will have a new violation and you will be required to start the SAP process over. I always recommend you take a non-dot drug test before your RTD drug test to ensure you are clean. When you return to work, you will be in the follow-up testing phase, ordered and monitored by your employer. The SAP will set up a follow-up testing plan of no fewer than 6 unannounced tests, over at least 12 months, up to 5 years.

Michelle has been a SAP practicing both in-person and video programs since 2018, with over 10 years of experience in DOT/FMCSA regulatory compliance.
